La Ilíada de los tarados, El Ramayana de los retrasados; el intento de un grupo de deficientes mentales en llevar al cine una historia de igual o mayor magnitud que los títulos claves del expresionismo germano o los films de Eisenstéin y Kurosawa juntos.
Y el resultado es tan apabullante que casi da la impresión de ser conseguido.

La Historia de Ricky (Lik Wong/Riki-Oh, 1991, de Ngai Kai Lam), cinta hongkonesa basada en el ultraviolento manga de Masahiko Takajo y Tetsuya Saruwatari (*1), es una clase magistral de ineptitud técnica en todos los órdenes y sobre todo de fuerza, pasión y amor por la vida. Ricky Oh es un superhombre, poseedor de la mortal disciplina del chi-kung, arte marcial capáz de otorgar a quien lo domine el poder de atravesar y cercenar cuerpos u objetos contundentes además de una invulnerabilidad que roza con lo inmortal. Es llevado a prisión al matar al asesino de su novia. Inmerso en un mundo donde "las corporaciones multinacionales han privatizado las prisiones y demás instituciones estatales", Ricky Oh continuará su gesta sangrienta, inocente y altruísta, enfrentando las injusticias del penal, guiado siempre por la convicción de "ayudar a los débiles".
Pues la película es exactamente eso: la historia de Ricky. La epopeya de un hombre de quien se sabe muy poco o mejor dicho lo imprescindible: el increíble poder que su entrenamiento le ha conferido y la misión salvadora que su condición de guerrero le indica seguir en un contexto caduco que verá con dolor y esperanza su ascención y apoteósis.
No he tenido oportunidad de leer el manga pero se sabe que su desarrollo es convencional y coherente, sin ningún atisbo de la agobiante intención redentora que el film intenta plasmar. La versión cinematográfica toma de la historieta lo que le interesa: los villanos son poderosos pues han de medirse con un titán, no lo olvidemos, crueles y algunos capaces de reconocer la grandeza de Ricky ante un gesto suyo de bondad, no importando si momentos antes han sido mutilados por nuestro protagonista; pueden convertirse en monstruos de papel mache y hacer alarde de su perversidad; utilizar sus vísceras como instrumentos de asfixia o aterrorizar a los reclusos que caminan libremente, a toda hora, por los diferentes espacios de la prisión. Mas Ricky siempre está ahí, tenáz e indómito, listo para abrirse paso entre hemoglobina y carne desgarrada. (*2)
Es imposible imaginarse esta atrocidad como el resultado de un trabajo mediocre y desganado; las verdaderas películas malas naufragan en su lentitud, que no es lo mismo que contemplatividad, "inquietudes artísticas" o bien a causa de estereotipos serviles. Desdeñando las supuestas complejidades y soporíferas introspecciones del cine de autor contemporáneo (Allen, Almodóvar, Van Sant, Lynch, Von Trier, Miike y tantos más) y la vistosa monotonía del mainstream fílmico, La Historia de Ricky nos demuestra que ha diferencia del intelectual moderno, algunas personas de "raciocinio" limitado si creen en héroes.

Además del film de acción real se han producido dos cintas animadas: Riki-Oh: The Wall Of Hell (1990) y Riki-Oh: Child of Destruction. Cabe señalar que la obra de Takajo y Saruwatari toma muchos aspectos del manga Hokuto no Ken (El Puño de La Estrella del Norte, 1983-1988) de Buronson y Tetsuo Hara, el cual a su vez es deudor de la estética de los dos primeros films de la serie de Mad Max: Mad Max (1979) y Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) de George Miller.
(*2) El gore de esta película se distingue de otros filmes de violencia explícita por el mensaje que intenta enviar: como La Pasión de Cristo (2004) de Mel Gibson, no busca un regodeo jocoso en lo escatológico, tampoco servir de simple mecanismo para generar repudio o impacto como sucede en muchas películas de terror protagonizadas por adolescentes o en estafas asustaviejas hechas en Japón como Tetsuo e Ichi The Killer; busca mas bien subrayar la intensidad de los padecimientos que Ricky tiene que soportar, la maldad de sus enemigos y el clima general de opresión que se vive en la prisión; todo claro, desde el particular enfoque de los visionarios autores de esta joya.
